Kentucky Legislature passes bill regulating school employee-student communications
Dr. Terra Hancock - Superintendent | Union County Public School

The Kentucky Legislature has passed Senate Bill 181, introducing new regulations on how school employees can communicate with students. The bill mandates that each board of education must designate specific programs or applications as a traceable communication system. This system will be the sole method for electronic communication between school district employees, volunteers, and students.

Under the new law, which takes effect on Friday, June 27, 2025, unauthorized communications will include personal email accounts, text messaging, social media platforms, or any other electronic notification systems not part of the designated traceable communication system.

To assist in understanding these changes, an FAQ sheet has been prepared. For further inquiries about Senate Bill 181, individuals are encouraged to contact Evan Jackson at (270)389-1694 or via email at [email protected].
