Medical cannabis will become legal in Boone County on January 1.
Dispensaries, which function similarly to pharmacies, can implement their own regulations. According to SAO Safron, cities have the authority to set restrictions on hours of operation and impose business fees. Additionally, zoning and distance regulations may be established.
The new state rules regarding medical cannabis dispensaries will take effect on January 1, 2025. If local rules are not enacted, the more open state regulations will apply.
There are limited zoning opportunities for cannabis businesses; however, citizens approved medical cannabis during the November 5 election. The Board has introduced Ordinance No. 2024-17, which was read for the second time at the December 2 Board Meeting. This ordinance aims to completely repeal Ordinance No. 2024-10, which previously prohibited cannabis businesses from operating in Union.
